As of November 4th, the US has officially left the Paris Climate Agreement. The landmark accord is aimed at protecting the planet from the worsening impacts of the climate crisis
The Paris Agreement’s central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
For the next 68 days, the United States will be the only country to have left the accord. The American departure from the Paris Agreement also means the end of U.S. contributions to a global fund to help smaller and poorer countries bear disproportionate costs of climate change.
President-elect Joe Biden can rejoin the agreement; under the rules, all that is required is a month's notice, and the US should be back in the fold. Biden has outlined his commitment to protect the environment with a proposed $5 trillion plan. His plan to address the climate emergency would aspire to a 100% clean energy economy and reaching net-zero emissions no later than 2050.
In the meantime, HUABIO, along with several states and businesses, has pledged to continue cutting carbon and make up for the Federal government's decision to walk away from the US commitment under Paris by following guidelines set forth by the Gold Standard program.
